NT Wright has announced that he will retire the bishopric of Durham on August 31. I don’t blame him. Being an Anglican bishop these days is a pretty crummy occumpation. It’s all falling apart and you have no magisterial (i.e. papal) support. It’s a house built on sand. Here are the details from CT: Leading New Testament scholar N….

I was privileged to see NT Wright ordain twenty-five to thirty deacons and priests at Durham Cathedral last Petertide. As a Canadian visitor, I was grateful to God to be inspired and blessed by this strengthening of the Durham Diocese in its diverse ministry.
Wright has done a wonderful service to Christ’s church by serving as Bishop of Durham and is now returning to his ministry of teaching and writing. The suggestion that he is abandoning a sinking ship is ludicrous and reflects the dubious motives on the part of those who would suggest that being a Bishop in Christ’s Church is a ‘crummy occupation’. Shame on you. Fortunately we have God’s promise that the gates of hell will not prevail against the Church in spite of all the petty minds who refuse to believe that and in doing so become increasingly schismatic and expressive of a very unattractive spirit of superiority and spiritual pride.
